From passion projects to paid work, being a creator today means much more than just making great content. It also means understanding copyright, contracts and how to protect yourself in an increasingly professional creative space.

At Deviant Legal, we’ve seen first-hand what can happen when the right legal precautions are not in place. And because we genuinely value the creator community we’re also a part of, we want to do more than just show support through likes on social media.

That’s why we’re offering two free online workshops designed specifically for all kinds of creators in spaces like making digital art, cosplays, photography and commission-based work.

Content and Copyright: How to protect your work and respect others’

Whether you’re a casual creator or working full-time, creating within fandom spaces raises legal questions. When does fan work cross into copyright infringement? Can you sell (3D) prints, especially when working with photographers or using copyrighted characters? And who is responsible for commissioned pieces based on existing IP?

In this workshop, we break down the basics of intellectual property in a practical way. We’ll explore how copyright and trademarks apply to cosplay, digital art, photography, and crafts. Both online and offline. You’ll learn why some brands tolerate fan-made content while others enforce their rights, and what that means for selling merchandise, using logos, or monetizing your work.

We’ll also cover how to protect your own creations. This, through copyright, branding, or trademarks. And of course, what to do if your content is copied, leaked, or used without permission. There will also be time for Q&A, focusing on real-world creator situations.

By the end, you’ll understand your rights, risks, and how to confidently create and monetize legally.

A Creator’s survival guide for commissions & collaborations

Whether you’re a casual creator or working full-time, turning your creative work into income often means that you will enter into contracts. That leads to an important question: what should you agree on before taking commissions, collaborating with brands, or appearing at conventions?

In this workshop, we break down the basics of contracts in a practical way. We’ll cover key agreements for commissioned work, brand sponsorships, influencer deals, and convention appearances. You’ll learn how to handle refunds and cancellations, what to watch for in agency agreements and how clauses like exclusivity and usage rights can impact your work and income.

We’ll also look at how to protect yourself when working with clients, brands, and photographers, and what fair and clear agreements should include. There will be time for Q&A, focusing on real-world situations creators face.

By the end, you’ll understand how to work with contracts confidently, protect your interests, and get paid fairly for your work.
